Another fantastic FESSH | Federation of European Societies for the Surgery of the Hand Congress comes to an end. This year’s meeting in Basel attracted a record-breaking attendance of more than 2,800 participants and was dedicated to the theme “Restoration of the Balance.”
One of the most encouraging developments throughout the congress was the strong presence of ultrasound within the scientific and educational program. For me personally, it was a privilege to contribute to several of these activities:
• Together with @xaviergueffier and @lattretom , I participated in the Educational Wednesday program, including a live ultrasound demonstration.
• The two-day ultrasound workshop brought together more than 120 participants and sold out within minutes of registration opening, reflecting the growing interest in ultrasound among hand surgeons. I had the pleasure of serving as chair while also being part of the presenting faculty together with @dra_carla_nunes , @drjavierferreira , and @dr.fernando_davila . Supported by 19 ultrasound systems and an outstanding international tutor team, participants were able to explore the anatomy of the hand and wrist through extensive hands-on training and small-group teaching.
• I also had the opportunity to participate in the Nerve Examination Workshop alongside @traumaunit_casanas and Janina Turon, presenting on Imaging of peripheral nerves.
• The congress concluded with the session “Ultrasound – A Balanced Tool with Real Impact in Daily Practice,” which I had the honor of chairing together with @dr.fernando_davila . The session highlighted the expanding role of ultrasound in hand surgery, covering topics ranging from dynamic examinations and tumor assessment to fracture sonography and ultrasound-guided interventions.
A heartfelt thank you goes to @dra_carla_nunes , @drjavierferreira , @dr.fernando_davila , and all tutors whose expertise, enthusiasm, and dedication created an outstanding learning experience for the participants.
Reflections from the 7th edition of the Ultrasound-Guided Upper Limb Surgery Course at @ircadfrance .
A big thank you to @dr.jeanmichel.cognet and @docteuroliviermares for the invitation and for the opportunity to be part of this outstanding course once again. It is always inspiring to spend a few days with colleagues who are constantly pushing the boundaries of ultrasound-guided surgery and sharing their experience so openly.
Thanks as well to all participants for the great discussions, the challenging questions, and the enthusiasm they brought to the course.
And finally, a special thank you to Fanny Hiltenbrand and @christophemathoulin , as well as the entire faculty and IRCAD team, for creating such a unique learning environment. It is always a pleasure to be back in Strasbourg, and I am already looking forward to seeing everyone again at the next edition.

Another course on ultrasound-guided upper limb surgery took place last week at @ircadfrance
Ultrasound-guided surgery continues to gain widespread acceptance, is increasingly requested by patients, and—depending on the indication—has become standard practice for many hand surgeons. In addition to clinical advantages, ecological considerations and the possibility of performing these procedures in an office-based setting are compelling reasons to adopt this method in daily practice.
Many thanks to @docteuroliviermares and @dr.jeanmichel.cognet for the opportunity to once again be part of the faculty as a speaker and instructor, and to contribute to the success of this course—together with wonderful colleagues such as @drjavierferreira, @docteurthomasapard, @dra_carla_nunes, @dr.fernando_davila, @dr.michielcromheecke, @mebarkinder_sportmedecine, @docteurmaximerousie, and @dr.chammas.pierreemmanuel.
The next course at @ircadfrance will take place in May. Course registration: https://www.ircad.fr/wp-content/uploads/2026-Program-ULTRASOUND.pdf
We also teach this technique at IRCAD centers in Brazil, @ircadindia, and Taiwan, and—for the first time this year—at @ircadnorthamerica in Charlotte, North Carolina: https://ircadna.org

Here are a few impressions from this year’s Annual Congress of the German Society for Hand Surgery (DGH), which took place at the Congress Centrum Würzburg.
Once again, it was a pleasure to organize and chair the fully booked course on ultrasound diagnostics of the hand. Additionally, I had the opportunity to give a lecture and live demonstration during the joint session of the @dg_handchirurgie and @dahth_e.v._handtherapie, focusing on the role of ultrasound diagnostics in tendon disorders of the hand.
Many thanks to @intercongress_gmbh for their long-standing support, and to @canondeutschland, @gehealthcare, and @esaote_official for supporting this year’s course.

On the way back from a truly inspiring Cross-Border Ultrasound Meeting 2025 at the Congress Center Davos.
With a clear interdisciplinary spirit, yesterday’s full-day hands-on seminar on ultrasound diagnostics of the upper extremity brought together experts from multiple specialties. Topics included infiltrations, nerve imaging, trauma, and rheumatology – all approached from a highly practical perspective.
A heartfelt thank-you to the outstanding speakers who made this event possible:
Tim Mäcken, Peter Schwarzkopf, Rainer Litz, Giorgio Tamborrini, Elvira Bodmer, Hannes Gruber, Esther Vögelin, Alexander Grimm, Christian Marx, Raphael Micheroli und Wolfgang Hartung.
This morning, I had the pleasure of leading a hands-on workshop on the ultrasonographic anatomy of the hand, supported by fantastic colleagues who jumped in as tutors:
Jürg Prim, Florian Huber, and Marco Guidi.
And finally, many thanks to our industry partners – Canon Medical, GE, and Samsung – for their generous support and commitment to advancing ultrasound education.
The 80th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand took place this year in beautiful Vancouver, BC, Canada — once again a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues from all over the world, not just North America.
It was especially nice to reconnect with members of our ultrasound community — Carla Nunes, Fernando Dávila Fernández, and Olivier Marès.
Many thanks to Frederik Verstreken for the kind invitation to contribute to the session “If James Bond Was a Hand Surgeon: Getting the Most from the Latest Tech” with a talk on „Ultrasound for Diagnosis and Treatment in the Hand, Wrist, and Forearm“.

Injections into small joints can be particularly challenging in the hand. Ultrasound—shown here using the out-of-plane technique at the STT joint from palmar—allows highly precise placement of the medication.
Its advantages include direct joint penetration without the need to „search along the bone“, which greatly improves patient comfort during the procedure. The drug can also be placed entirely intra-articularly, as demonstrated by the distension of the joint capsule. Especially with corticosteroid injections, typical steroid-related side effects such as fat-tissue atrophy or skin discoloration can therefore be almost completely avoided.
